Sauvignon Blanc from Sattlerhof

  • Post category:tastings

All in white was the motto of today. Snowfall outside and two latecomers from the respekt.BIODYN tasting in the glass.

The two wines are from the Sattlerhof, one of the two youngest members of the winegrowers’ association.

The biodynamically operating winery Sattlerhof is located in Styria in Austria. Alexander and Andreas Sattler had sent us two of their stainless steel vinified Sauvignon Blanc wines to taste.

The Ortswein (village wine)  Gamlitz 2018 and the Riedenwein (Single Vineyard Site) Ried Kranachberg 2017.

The Ortswein comes from the Gamlitz vineyards at an altitude of up to 450 meters. The soil spectrum ranges from maritime sands to limestone.

The Gamlitz is fresh, straightforward with ripe tropical fruit, peach, citrus, grapefruit, cassis and some gooseberry all embedded in subtle spice notes and pear on the finish.

Calcareous sands with high manganese content dominate the steep Kranachberg site.

The wine from this topsite is just at the beginning of its evolution: Papaya, passion fruit, pear. Herbs and cassis emerge with aeration. Cool mineral notes end in a long saline finish. Best put away now and bring out again in a few years.
