Another impressive tasting at the Masters of Wine Symposium in Wiesbaden was the comparison of Rieslings from all over the world. Some of you asked for the tasting notes of this lineup. here are some:
Egon Mueller Scharzhofberger Kabinett Alte Reben 2015: Delicate lemon, apricot, orange. A vintage with warm summer and a cooler September. Lovely acidity and great length – very youthful and vibrant.
Egon Mueller Scharzhofberger Auslese 2005: Wonderful ripe apricot, peach, honey, touch of quince, very balanced by its sweetness and acidity, superb length.
Juergen Hofmann, Hundertgulden 2020: Lime, smokey, wet stone salty finish. Very appealing.
Trimbach Clos St. Hune 2016: Fresh acidity, amazing grip of fine tannins. Still very closed. Lemon, quince, stone fruit, slightly creamy, mineral. A classic from a classic vintage.
Trimbach Cuvée St Emile 1998 (magnum): Lovey savouriness, matured elegance, tertiary notes, lanolin, beeswax, stone fruit, lovely texture, long lingering finish, perfect to drink now.
Julien Schaal Rangen 2021: classic vintage, very linear, gunpowder. Stone fruit, smokey character, saline finish.
Emmerich Knoll Ried Schuett Smaragd 2016: Fresh, linear, elegant with great tension, stone fruit. Love it!!
Emmerich Knoll Ried Schuett Smaragd 2018: Lovely stone fruit character, smoky minerals, riper style.
Grabenwerkstatt, Trenning 2021: Very Smokey, reductive, gunpowder, saline minerality, crisp acidity, a lot of focus and length, great wine and one of my surprises.
Grosset Springvale 2022 (Loam over soft limestone): elegant and long, lemon, green apple, florals lime generosity, brightly shining and very appealing now.
Grossett Polish Hill 2022 (Gravel, blue slate): Smoky, linear, lingering, salty finish. Needs time.
Rieslingfreak No. 5 2005: Elegant, juicy with great freshness and balance, lemony character refreshing style.
Chateau St. Michelle Eroica 2021: Off-dry, lovely juiciness, peach, and some floral notes. A true crowdpleaser.
Red Newt Cellars The Knoll 2019 Finger Lakes: Ripe, pronounced stone fruit, grapefruit. petrol, good palate weight.
