What a wonderfully Riesling: the Zöbinger Heiligenstein Alte Reben (Old Vines) from the Bründlmayer family in the Austrian Kamptal. Dense, intense and multi-layered.
The vines are up to 70 years old and grow on terraced, weathered sandstone. The days are warm; the nights cool thanks to the wooded hills. Thus, a ripe fruit goes hand in hand with fresh acidity.
The bouquet of the 2016 vintage we tasted reveals lemon, ripe peach, pineapple and honey. With air, meadow herbs and some mustard seed emerge. The taste is fresh, with a light creaminess and a very long, salty finish. Very dense, complex and focused. A baby yet, but with enormous potential.
