Gold at Schloss Johannisberg

I had the pleasure of tasting the first-class triple here at Schloss Johannisberg with Estate Manager Stefan Doktor. My highlight was the 2018 Goldlack, the top wine among the estate’s dry wines. It is really complex and defined less by its yellow-fruity aroma than its wonderful texture. Fresh, very dense with grippy tannins that are skilfully wrapped by an elegant creaminess. Although still entirely closed, this wine promises great things for the future.

The bronze finish is already enjoyable now – the “entry”, so to speak, into the dry top league of the winery. The acidity feels as precise as a laser. The fruit, ripened to the point, complements perfectly: white peach, Granny Smith, acacia, a little mint and herbal spice. For me, the perfect aperitif.  An absolute classic is, of course, the Spätlese; after all, it was “invented” at Schloss Johannisberg in 1775. The 2019 vintage of this Spätlese is also simply superb. The wine combines brilliance, freshness, melting, juiciness and complexity. White peach, lemon tart, green apple, tropical fruit and delicate spice integrated into a perfect balance of acidity and sweetness.

It is awe-inspiring how the estate has returned to a world-class level in terms of quality in recent years. Chapeau Stefan & Team!!!
