Balmoral the “Lazarus” Wine

Sometimes you have to give the wine time to evolve. One example is this bottle Balmoral 1996 from Rosemount. The top Shiraz from McLaren Vale initially impressed us just moderately at the weekend with friends.  The nose was a bit dusty, dull and seemed to be well past its peak.

It got a little better over the evening, but the wine didn’t convince us. On the other hand, the Shiraz turned out to be gorgeous the next day. Delicate wild strawberries, dried blackberries, mulberries, tobacco, pepper, forest floor and porcini mushrooms. Medium length with fine tannins. Almost a (pre)Christmas miracle.
